What Novex covers
Novex Communications manages public performance rights for some of the most commercially significant labels in Indian music. Their current repertoire includes Zee Music Company, Yash Raj Films, Tips Industries, Shemaroo Entertainment, Saregama (from April 2025), Happy Music, Red Ribbon Entertainment, Velvet Vibes, Think Music, Daler Mehndi, Gurdas Maan, and Music and Sound.
Novex was founded in 2002 by Ketan Kanakia and has grown into one of India's most active licensing agencies. Unlike PPL, Novex is not a registered copyright society — it operates as an assignee and agent for its labels under Sections 18 and 30 of the Copyright Act. The Bombay High Court confirmed in January 2024 that this arrangement is legally valid, meaning Novex can enforce its rights and sue for infringement.
Why Novex matters for most events
For events that play mainstream Bollywood music, Novex is unavoidable. If your DJ plays Pathaan songs, Kala Chasma, Ghungroo, Gallan Kardi, or anything from the Yash Raj or Zee Music catalogues, a Novex licence is required separately from PPL. YRF alone accounts for some of the most-played tracks at corporate events, weddings, and club nights in India.
Saregama is now under Novex
In April 2025, Saregama — one of India's oldest and largest music libraries with over 140,000 recordings — moved its public performance rights to Novex. Saregama's catalogue spans golden era Bollywood classics, regional music, devotional tracks, and contemporary hits. Kalamkaar Music left Novex
Effective 19 March 2026, Kalamkaar Music is no longer part of the Novex repertoire. Tracks from Kalamkaar Music are no longer covered by a Novex licence. If you are building a setlist that includes Kalamkaar tracks, check their current licence status on Trakinfo.
Novex's legal status
Like PPL, Novex is not a registered copyright society. The Delhi HC's April 2025 ruling that affected PPL theoretically applies to Novex as well, since both operate outside the copyright society framework. However, Novex has won injunctions in multiple courts, including the Madras High Court, and the Bombay High Court has upheld their right to licence. The Supreme Court's final ruling on PPL v Azure will clarify the landscape for Novex as well.
